Diamonds are a girls best friend

They look like earrings no? NO! They are in fact diamond encrusted earphones. Earlier this year, jeweller Thomas Heyerdahl created the world’s most expensive iPod, named "iDiamond"--It was crafted to be auctioned away for charitable cause in London on the 13th of March. However now he has created and is launching "iDiamond ear" (see right) for commercial sale, crazy Norweigans. According to Heyerdahl, "Each carefully crafted pair is set with 204 diamonds, adding up to a total of 1,65 carats. “iDiamond ear will be produced in a limited edition series of 1000 numbered pairs for exclusivity." These earphones are valued at $6,400--talk about breaking the bank...who would pay that much for earphones? In case you happen to be one of those people, the earphones will be available for purchase at all fine jewelry stores worldwide in February 2008. Interested? Click here for his website.

Functional and practical

Living in small spaces, as most of us college students living in NYC are, can be frustrating when shopping for furniture. This is why sdesignunit.com has come up with a genius way in which to use three pieces of furniture and translate them into a table and chairs, sofa, or even a bed! Wonderful. I'm not actually sure if this invention is on the market yet, but when it is I feel as though it would be perfect for cramped dorm rooms. The description stated on their website is:
"The young singles ratio is getting increase in the society. These people live alone in small apartment in the city. They would like to have multipurpose furniture for using small room efficiently. There are two chairs and on table. Ordinary these are two chairs and table. But When they watch TV. It can be Sofa. And when they go to sleep. It is going to be a single bed."
I think it's brilliant! The perfect mixture of fashion and practicality. What do YOU think?

Kind-of fishy

Ever wonder what to do with that old beater sitting out in front of your house? Me either, but apparently some others did. Judging by this video of a car turned fish tank, some thought about it long and hard and came up with the idea that a useless car can make for an ideal fish tank. Just something to think about I suppose. Check out the video of the car above which is on display in a shopping center in Bangkok. I'm thinking this may have been an artistic gesture rather than an applicable idea but nonetheless it's definitely fashionable!

Presents for Dad!

Christmas is about joy and laughter, these gifts are some that are irreplacable. So when coming across this invention I thought this would make the perfect gift for someone with a great sense of humor and false sense of importance. I don't know about your family, but with my family it's always a struggle to find a fun and thoughtful gift for the holidays. Even more of a struggle is to find a gift that gives a sense of excitement when, for example, your sister opens it up all excitedly only to find it is none other than a non-existant gagdet created by the pranksters at The Onion...oh Emily you have another thing coming to you. This year they have created a whole new set of four GotchaBox containers for Christmas, 2007. Some of these pranks include an auto power strip, a smoke alarm that plays sounds of the rain forest, or this "Visor.ganizer" that can supposedly carry up to seven pounds of crap in the visor of your hat. Very fashionable, muhaha. Check it out, and of course give the gift of giving this Christmas.

Japan is bizarre

This may be the most bizarre blog I've posted thus far but nonetheless I feel it is noteworthy so bare with me. So apparently women in Japan are fearful when walking alone on the streets on Tokyo therefore one woman decided to put a stop to this by designing a type of wearable urban disguise. Aya Tsukioka, a 29 year old Japanese fashion designer, has designed a skirt that when lifted transforms into a vending machine disguise (see picture above). By holding this sheet, that folds to become a makeshift skirt, and raising it above your head you can supposedly 'easily' blend in. This poses some questions in my mind, first being who in the hell would think to design something like this? Secondly, are people in Japan that oblivious that they wouldn't look twice at a felt vending machine (with feet visibly sticking out) placed on a random street? And finally, is Japan really that terrifying of a place that women would really need to use something this stupid as a safety measure...they should really look into mase. Anyways, check out the video below and let me know what YOU think. By the way I feel I should let you know that this isn't the only stupid invention made by the Japanese to ward off creepy people, they also have a "manhole bag" which is a purse that hides your valuables by unfolding to look like a round skewer cover. You lay this purse on the street, with your valuables still inside, and thieves will walk right by mistaking it for a manhole...does that even make sense? Another bright invention is a line of 'knife-proof' school uniforms. High schools in Japan must be pretty hard-core.

Lancome likes magnets

Get glam with Lancome's latest nail color: Lancome’s Le Magnetique. Not only is this polish a trendy and sophisticated shade of burgundy, but it contains magnetic particles that create a "star" effect (see below). How does this work one may ask? Simple. Hold nails over the bottle's built in magnet before the second coat of polish dries and watch as the particles align into a star-shaped pattern. Trendy and technolicious! Word on the street is that the polish is available at Nordstrom for $17- being beautiful doesn't come cheap, but I guarantee this polish will have people wondering what salon you went to! Perfect.

Crazy for Daisy!

Always at the cutting edge of everything, Marc Jacobs came out with a new fragrance in August that left fashonistas all over rejoicing. A trend setter and my personal favorite, Marc Jacobs "Daisy by Marc Jacobs" includes notes of wild strawberry, violet leaves, red grapefruit, gardenia, violet, jasmine, musk, vanilla and white woods (I've already purchased my bottle).
Says Jacobs of the fragrance: "Daisies don't smell, but I wanted to evoke the feeling that you get when you see them — happy and youthful."
You may be saying, what does this have to do with technology? I understand. What really drew me to this topic was the website for the fragrance which is young, hip, and really cool to navigate around so

Holograms mixed with couture

Diesel's Spring/Summer 08 catwalk show at the Pitti Immagine Uomo fair in Florence, was the epitome chic, mixing digital art and performance art. Check out the video below to see how a host of aquatic creature holograms appeared in mid-air to interact with the models in this unique "liquid space" blend of technology and fashion!

Cell phones are like shoes

When thinking about buying a new cell phone one must always think about the asthetics first and foremost. Cell phone shopping is rapidly becoming more and more like shoe shopping. The right pair of shoes must always be trendy, beautiful and of course way over your price range. Much like the new Tory Burch black suede boots I have my eye on, the iPhone is becoming the hippest and most sought-after cell phone ever made. Many may ask why is that? The answer to this is simple...it makes a statement just like your shoes. Ridiculous as it may be, cell phone companys have finally started thinking smartly about designing phones worthy of the young and hip crowds since they are their main consumers. Designers from Dolce and Gabbana to Prada have come out with cell phones, so it's agreed, if you want to be hip in this new technologically advanced world we live in...get a cool cell phone. I personally use the blackberry pearl, not only because its cute, small, and white...but because of the many features it offers. So don't worry about prices go ahead and get rid of that old flip phone...it's all about the look-nice shoes go hand in hand with a nice cell phone.

Technology can be so silly sometimes

So this week I decided to write about technology and as I was flipping through my favorite technological site and came across (gasp) something that pertains to fashion as well as technology!

Apparently the sub company
Erbert and Gerberts ( a small sub chain located only in Wisconsin, North Dakota, and Minnesota) has come up with a new marketing campaign. Instead of using old-fashion and expensive commercials to advertise its foods, they have started using a"human flip book" as advertisement.
Very interesting alternative.
According to gizmodo.com a commercial usually takes about $365,000 to produce and use, who knew? Adsurb and uncool, so why not use fashion as a clever way to get the point across? Well done Erbert and Gerberts! props.

Check out the video below and let me know what you think. Fashionable use
of technology...replacing old-fashioned food ad campaigns? Sounds fabulous.

Breakfast with Blackberrys; Where Fashion and Techonology Finally Merge.

Starring Audrey Hepburn in that famous
“little black dress” one of the most popular and influential fashion movies of all time without a doubt is “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Fashion can be linked with many things, one of these things being technology. Modern day women have seemed to replace the “little black dress” with a “little black blackberry” in this new fashionably technological world. Is the must-have new fall Marc Jacobs bag being replaced by the must-have new touch screen ipod? With technology changing at a rapid pace, it is steadily becoming more and more like
FASHION.
Designers display their fall lines only to be replaced with their spring lines in mere months. We are starting to see this trend more and more with technology. One has to wonder, has technology become as disposable as clothing? And if so, where should we draw the line?
